The Affordable Care Act requires that you have medical coverage and that you can provide proof of coverage. As a result, you may receive an IRS Form 1095 in January to indicate if you and any dependents were offered and/or enrolled in medical coverage through Stanford University. Depending on how you obtained your medical coverage, you may receive a 1095-B, a 1095-C, or even both. Postdoctoral scholars, former employees and other covered individuals will receive their Forms via U.S. mail, even if electronic delivery was previously elected.

This is important because most individuals who do not have minimum essential coverage or an exemption for each month of the year will need to make a payment with their tax return. You do not submit the form as a part of your personal income tax filing. In general, only individuals who were eligible for health benefits in 2022 will receive a 1095 from the university. One exception is if you were eligible for health benefits as a part-time regular employee in 2022 and you waived coverage, you will not receive a 1095 from U-M. You should not need to attach Form 1095 to your tax filing.
